EscapeTheRoomers Visited Our Escape Room. Here’s What They Found…

We could really have started this blog with a “Yeah, that’s us” meme of ourselves smugly smiling, but we’ll just say it…

EscapeTheRoomers dropped in at our NYC escape rooms.

Having refreshed our games since the last time they were here (more on that later)…

We were all perked up, and maybe a little bit nervous too.

Here’s how it turned out!

Wait a minute. Who are EscapeTheRoomers?

EscapeTheRoomers is a NYC-based escape room & play-at-home game review site. They also offer travel, food, and other entertainment hacks.

Started in 2018 by Cici Cao and Brandon Chow, it’s grown into a global team of 20 reviewers.

So they’re kind of like Room Escape Artist?

Well, yes and no.

REA might be the OG’s at this, but EscapeTheRoomers bring a distinctive approach to being escape room critics.

Among other things, EscapeTheRoomers awards the annual Bullseye Awards.

The Bullseye Awards?

Yes, awarded to escape rooms from around the world, under different categories ranging from best puzzles, best set design and so on.

We were featured in the 2019 Bullseye Awards for our haunted hotel escape room. Remember we said they’d visited us before?

Great. So they were at BrainXcape?

people in escape room planning

Yes, they dropped in on May 20th as part of their 2024 Escape Room Road Trip.

Imagine that eh? New York mystery game enthusiasts visiting an escape room in Manhattan.

Actually, it was a little more than that.

For one, we’ve replaced our old game Game of Gold with a new one Elevator to Hell where players have 60 minutes to save themselves from a hellish end.

We’ve also touched up our prison escape adventure (Rikers 1932, earlier known as Prison Break).

Rikers, 1932

man finding a clue

Trapped in New York’s most infamous penitentiary, can you find cryptic clues and escape before the guards catch you?

They rated it 6/10 for a team of 4 players.

What they found wow-worthy about our prison breakout adventure

  • The room design (think stone walls, lockers, and secret passages).
  • Puzzles blending into the game.
  • In-game reveals.

You should go through their complete review for details. Or, find out more about Rikers, 1932 and have a stab yourself!

Elevator to Hell

girl inside an elevator

You’re dead and in an elevator hurtling towards hell. Can you fix the elevator and reset where you’ll end up for eternity?

They rated it 5/10 for a team of 4 players.

Aha features of our elevator to hell game

  • Players are pleasantly surprised by how the experience begins (not revealing it here LOL).
  • Despite the seemingly intense theme, the game itself isn’t all that scary. Thrilling, but not scary.
  • The elevator set space is used efficiently, fitting players and puzzles snugly.
